Disastrous Korean Food Experience at Hae Kum Gang, Bangalore: An Honest Review

Introduction:
During our recent trip to Bangalore, we decided to explore Korean cuisine, something we had loved in the past. For lunch, we chose Hae Kum Gang, a well-known Korean restaurant. With high expectations, we stepped in, eager to relive the flavors of dishes like bulgogi and kimchi. Sadly, the experience turned out to be far from satisfying. Here’s an honest review of our visit.

The Ambiance:
Located on the first floor, Hae Kum Gang greets you with vibrant Korean cultural vibes. The walls are adorned with BTS posters, magazine articles, and other elements that reflect Korea’s rich culture. We had reserved our seats in advance and were quickly seated upon arrival.

Exploring the Menu:
The menu was vast, offering a variety of starters, rice dishes, noodles, and set meals with prices ranging from ₹300 to ₹1100. It was exciting to see so many options, and we decided on:

  1. Sushi Rolls (Starter)
  2. Ddeokbokki
  3. Chicken Bulgogi

We couldn’t wait to indulge in these dishes, especially since it had been years since we last enjoyed authentic Korean food.

Banchan (Side Dishes):
While waiting for our order, we were served the traditional Korean side dishes called banchan. The selection included:

  • Kimchi
  • Sprouted soybeans (kongnamul)
  • Pickled vegetables
  • Baby potatoes
  • A deep-fried side

Unfortunately, the sides were underwhelming. Kimchi, which we were particularly excited about, lacked the tangy and spicy kick it’s known for. It was disappointing to start the meal on such a mediocre note.

The Food Experience:

  • Sushi Rolls:
The sushi rolls were served with soy sauce for dipping. While visually appealing, the rolls tasted average. The rice was dry, and the overall flavor didn’t meet our expectations.
  • Ddeokbokki
Next came the ddeokbokki, a popular Korean dish of chewy rice cakes in a spicy sauce. Sadly, this dish was another disappointment. The sauce was bland, the glass noodles lacked flavor, and the vegetables did little to enhance the dish.
  • Chicken Bulgogi:
Finally, the main dish—chicken bulgogi. It was served with plain rice, but the bulgogi was coated in the same underwhelming sauce as the ddeokbokki. The spices were overpowering and poorly balanced, leaving a raw taste. The dish was far too spicy to enjoy, and we ended up leaving most of it uneaten.

A Learning Experience:
By the end of the meal, Bhargav was eating plain rice to satisfy his hunger, and Poorna drank several cups of water to cool her burning tongue. It was disheartening to leave most of the food untouched, but we didn’t want to risk our health by forcing ourselves to eat dishes that didn’t agree with us.

Final Verdict:
Our visit to Hae Kum Gang was an unfortunate experience, and we can’t recommend this restaurant based on the quality of food we received. While the ambiance was nice and the service was prompt, the food fell far below expectations.

Conclusion:
Not every culinary adventure ends with satisfaction, and that’s okay—it’s all part of the journey. Have you tried Korean food in Bangalore? If you’ve had better experiences, we’d love to hear your recommendations!
