If you’re a breakfast lover who enjoys exploring regional cuisines, then South Ruchi Square in Bangalore should definitely be on your food map! On our recent trip to Bangalore, we – the Mellowbites family – decided to indulge in an authentic Karnataka-style breakfast, and it turned out to be a memorable culinary adventurE
As we stepped into South Ruchi Square, we were welcomed by a well-lit and cozy ambience. The space was compact yet neatly arranged, creating a pleasant and homely vibe—perfect for a laid-back breakfast. What caught our attention immediately was the neat presentation of each table, complete with mint-flavored water, ghee, and podi in tiny containers—such thoughtful detailing!
We flipped through the menu, eagerly scanning the breakfast section. From Karnataka classics to a special dish of the day, the list was enough to excite any foodie. The restaurant also offered lunch platters ranging from Chinese to North and South Indian—something we noted down for a future visit!
The staff were courteous and helpful, taking the time to explain each dish, especially since most items were new to us. Their guidance helped us choose the most authentic and unique dishes—and the service was quick, too!
Now let’s talk about the star of the show – the food!
Our first pick was the Neer Dosa, and it instantly impressed us with its delicate, snow-white appearance and ultra-soft texture. Served with a comforting bowl of sambar and a side of shredded coconut mixed with jaggery, this dosa was nothing like the typical ones we’ve had before.
Balaji tried it first—he dipped the dosa into sambar, followed by a touch of the sweet coconut-jaggery mix—and wow! That flavor combination was pure comfort with a hint of dessert-like indulgence.
Next up, Poorna chose the Cheese Chili Dosa—a favorite among kids. The dosa was golden and crisp, layered with gooey cheese, and came with a side of potato masala and mint chutney. Poorna loved the spicy tang of the mint chutney paired with the cheesy goodness—each bite had her nodding with approval!
I went a little offbeat and ordered the Sago Idli—a dish none of us had ever tried before. The two large idlis were beautifully topped with cashews and served with sambar and two varieties of chutneys. The texture was soft, slightly grainy from the sago, and absolutely divine with the chutney. The sweet-tasting Karnataka-style sambar added a comforting warmth that elevated the dish further.
Bhargav opted for the Akki Roti, another first-time experience for us. Two warm rotis made with rice flour, carrots, herbs, and aromatic spices arrived at the table, each topped with a dollop of melting butter. Served with chutneys, aloo masala, and sambar, this dish was hearty, earthy, and super filling.
The texture of the roti had just the right amount of chewiness, and the flavor of fresh herbs and rice flour was distinct and delicious. Bhargav enjoyed every bite!
Every dish we tried was a new discovery, and the experience of tasting Karnataka’s traditional breakfast for the first time was incredibly special. From the subtle sweetness in the sambar to the generous use of fresh coconut and herbs, the flavors felt homey, comforting, and deeply regional.
The service was quick, the ambience was warm, and the prices were quite reasonable—making South Ruchi Square a highly recommended spot for anyone looking to try authentic Karnataka breakfast dishes in Bangalore.
So if you’re in the area and wondering where to start your day, give this place a try. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, a foodie or just hungry for something new—this spot has something that’ll leave your tastebuds smiling.
