Thatta payaru kuzhambu

Ingredients:

Thata payaru                – 1 cup
onion                            – 1 finely chopped
tomato                          –  2
garlic cloves                –   10-12
 tamarind paste            –  1 tbsp
cumin powder              –  11/2 tsp
chilli powder               –   2 tsp
turmeric                       –  1/8 tsp
hing                             –  a pinch
curry leaves                 –   few
sesame oil                    –  2 tbsp
mustard seeds              –  1/4 tsp
fenugreek seeds            – 1/4 tsp
salt                                –  to taste

 

Method:

  • In a pressure cooker add 2 cups of water and a cup of thatta payaru and pressure cook upto 3 whistles.
  • In a kadai heat sesame oil and temper with mustard seeds,fenugreek seeds and curry leaves.
  •  Add garlic cloves , turmeric and little hing to it.

  • After a while add onion and fry until iturns golden

  • Now put the sliced tomatoes and stir it for a while.

  • Add the salt,chilli powder,cumin powder to it.

  • After the masala blends well add the pressure cooked thatta payaru with 11/2 cups water and a tablespoon of tamarind paste.

 
 

  • Cover it with a lid and cook for another 7-10 minutes until the oil starts oozing out a little check and add more salt if needed.

  • Serve with Rice and papad
