Dinner at Thattukadai Le Puttu Kadai – A Unique Puttu Experience in Trivandrum

For our dinner in Trivandrum, we decided to explore Thattukadai Le Puttu Kadai, a well-known spot for its wide variety of puttu dishes. The vibrant lighting outside immediately caught our attention, and we were excited to try out the many puttu varieties they offered. Since we were in Kerala, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to experience their authentic flavors.

70 Varieties of Puttu – A Puttu Lover’s Paradise

As we stepped inside, we were amazed by the 70 varieties of puttu listed on the board. From sweet, spicy, vegetarian, non-vegetarian, and even fruit-based puttu, the menu offered a diverse range. The pricing was quite reasonable, ranging from Rs. 40 to Rs. 80. One of the highlights of this place was the live kitchen counter located outside, which was bustling with activity.

Ambience – A Home-Turned-Restaurant

The restaurant had a cozy and homely feel, as it appeared to be a refurbished house. Each room had a separate dining area, and we chose a comfortable spot inside. When we received the menu, it was entirely in Malayalam. Since we couldn’t read the language, we sought help from the waiter. Though communication was a bit challenging, we managed to understand the recommended dishes.

Our Order – Beef Puttu, Chicken Puttu, Ragi Puttu & Kerala Paratha with Kadala Curry

We decided to try three puttu varieties along with a Kerala Paratha with Kadala Curry. After a 10-minute wait, our food arrived.

  • Beef Puttu: This dish was steaming hot and filled with chunks of tender, juicy beef and coconut. The combination was incredibly flavorful and well worth the try.
  • Chicken Puttu: Similar in appearance to the beef puttu, this version had well-cooked chicken stuffing. The flavors were rich and satisfying.
  • Ragi Puttu: This puttu was made with ragi and rava, layered with shredded coconut. It was neither sweet nor spicy but rather dry and bland. We even tried pairing it with kadala curry, but it didn’t enhance the taste much. We would love to hear from locals or food enthusiasts on how to properly enjoy ragi puttu – let us know in the comments!
  • Kerala Paratha with Kadala Curry:
  • Since we come from a town known for its parathas, we had high expectations. However, we found this dish to be quite ordinary and not as unique as we had hoped.

Final Thoughts – A Unique & Affordable Food Experience

Despite the language barrier, we had a memorable dining experience. The food was served piping hot, the pricing was budget-friendly, and the homely setting made it even more interesting. If you’re in Trivandrum and love exploring different types of puttu, this place is definitely worth a visit.
