Millet Magic Episode 6: Wholesome Kodo Millet Pongal (Varagu Arisi Pongal)

Looking for a power-packed yet comforting breakfast? Try this Kodo Millet Pongal – also known as Varagu Arisi Pongal, a nutritious twist to the traditional South Indian favorite.

🍽 Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Kodo Millet (Varagu Arisi)
  • ½ cup Moong Dal (Yellow split gram)
  • 1 inch Fresh Ginger (crushed)
  • 4 cups Water
  • Salt – as required
  • 7 tsp Ghee
  • 2–3 tbsp Broken Cashews
  • 1 tbsp Black Pepper (whole or slightly crushed)
  • 1 tbsp Cumin Seeds
  • Few Curry Leaves

🧑‍🍳 Method:

  1. Mix and Wash: Combine Kodo millet and moong dal. Wash well and soak in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Pressure Cook: In a pressure cooker, add 4 cups of water. Drain and add the soaked millet and dal. Add salt and crushed ginger. Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  3. Prepare Tempering: In a pan, heat 7 tsp ghee. Add broken cashews, sauté till golden. Add pepper, cumin, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute and turn off.
  4. Combine: Add the tempering to the cooked pongal and mix thoroughly.
  5. Serve: Hot with sambar, coconut chutney, or plain curd.
