Mornings in Madurai have their own charm – and if you’re a true foodie, starting your day with a comforting South Indian breakfast is a must! On our recent trip, we revisited our favorite destination – Phils Bistro, but this time, it was their Aapam Corner, a morning-only delight open from 7 AM to 11 AM.
The setup is minimalist and warm, featuring a live open kitchen where you can see steaming hot aapams being made right in front of your eyes. The menu is curated and focused – Aapams and Idiyappams paired with your choice of four flavorful curries – Vegetarian, Egg Masala, Chicken Curry, and Mutton Paaya.
We were just a bit late to try the Idiyappams, as they were already sold out – a reminder that this spot is popular and an early visit is best!
Let’s take you through our tasting journey:
A rich, tomato-onion based curry with a floating, perfectly cooked boiled egg. The curry had a glossy texture and balanced flavor. Poorna loved how the aapam soaked up the masala, and the egg added that fulfilling bite. Her verdict? “Double OK!”
This combo came with 3 generous chicken pieces in a thick masala gravy. Bhargav sipped the curry like soup – yes, it was that rich! The chicken was tender and juicy, and though I suggested pairing it with the aapam, he enjoyed each component on its own.
A local favorite. The paaya curry was a creamy coconut-based gravy with a subtle kick from green chillies. I took a spoonful like a soup – and wow, the flavors danced on the tongue. The soft mutton bits added to the richness. This combo is a definite must-try!
The surprise star! Carrots, cauliflower, and potatoes cooked in a silky coconut gravy made this vegetarian option feel luxurious. Smooth, soulful, and satisfying.
To wrap it up, we sipped on Lemon Tea and Black Tea – both refreshing, but the black tea won our hearts.
Phils Bistro’s Aapam Corner in Madurai offers a beautiful blend of simplicity and depth in every dish. If you’re in the city, don’t miss this spot for a relaxed, flavorful breakfast that captures the essence of Tamil cuisine.
