Pondicherry is always known for its charming French streets, cozy cafés, colorful buildings, and unique food culture. But during our recent visit, we had one of the most unexpected and memorable dining experiences ever — all because of one dish written outside a restaurant.
Yes… “Lobster Thermidor.”
The moment we saw that name displayed outside the restaurant board, we didn’t even think twice. As seafood lovers, lobster is something we absolutely enjoy, but it’s also something we rarely find freshly available in many restaurants. That single menu item instantly made us walk into the restaurant.
And that’s how our beautiful experience at Chez Francis, Pondicherry began.
What made the experience even more interesting was Balaji reaching the restaurant before us just to confirm whether the lobster was actually available!
Because honestly, lobster dishes are not very commonly available everywhere, especially when you specifically crave them. Once the confirmation came, we rushed straight into the restaurant with full excitement.
We had previously tasted Lobster Thermidor at Phil’s in Madurai, so naturally our expectations were already high.
Surprisingly, the outdoor dining section was almost empty when we entered. The place had a very calm and peaceful vibe.
The outdoor seating area looked extremely beautiful with natural lighting, greenery, and a refreshing ambience. Green plants surrounded the dining space, making it look aesthetic and relaxing. It honestly felt like one of those cozy European-style cafés hidden inside Pondicherry streets.
But since the weather outside was quite hot, we decided to take our seats inside the restaurant.
And that’s when we started truly noticing the interiors.
The ambience inside looked antique, artistic, and uniquely designed. Every decorative piece had its own charm and character. The warm lighting and vintage-style décor made the waiting time enjoyable.
Before preparing the dish, the restaurant staff explained how the lobster would be served, which made us even more curious and excited.
Thankfully, the waiting time wasn’t too long because the ambience itself kept us engaged.
Every corner of the restaurant looked thoughtfully decorated and visually pleasing.
But honestly… our minds were fully waiting for just one thing.
The Lobster Thermidor.
And there it was.
Beautifully plated, rich-looking, creamy, and absolutely appetizing.
The lobster was served alongside mashed potatoes, colorful vegetables, and topped with delicate micro greens. The presentation itself looked luxurious and mouthwatering.
The creamy stuffing inside the lobster shell looked irresistible. We literally couldn’t wait any longer and immediately started digging into it.
The lobster meat was juicy, tender, creamy, and perfectly cooked. Even while pulling the meat out from the shell, you could see how soft and flavorful it was.
Every bite felt rich and satisfying.
While Bhargav was busy enjoying every single bite of lobster meat, I started carefully analyzing all the little details of the dish.
One thing that stood out was the mushrooms stuffed along with the lobster meat. That added a wonderful earthy flavor and blended beautifully with the creamy texture.
Even the micro greens tasted fresh and enhanced the overall experience surprisingly well.
The mashed potatoes complemented the lobster perfectly and balanced the richness of the creamy filling.
Every single component on the plate worked together beautifully.
And yes… we genuinely finished almost everything on the plate without leaving much behind!
This was honestly one of those random food experiences that turned unexpectedly memorable.
What started as a simple walk through Pondicherry streets became an unforgettable seafood experience.
The Lobster Thermidor at Chez Francis was creamy, juicy, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Combined with the charming ambience and peaceful dining experience, it became one of our favorite food memories from Pondicherry.

Sometimes the best food experiences happen completely unplanned.
