Snake Gourd curry(pudalangai kootu)

Ingredients:

Snake gourd                      – 1
chana dhal/bengal gram    – 1/4 cup
red chillies                         –  4 (break into two)
mustard seeds                     – 1/2 tsp
urad dhal                             – 1/2 tsp
cumin seeds                        – 1/2 tsp
hing                                     – 1/4 tsp
curry leaves                         – few
onion                                    – 1/2 cup
salt                                       –  to taste
shredded coconut                 – 2 tbsp
oil                                         – 1 tsp

Method:

  • In pressure cooker  cook 1/4 of chana dhal for 1 whistle adding 3/4 cup water
  • Simultaneously peel the skin of snakegourd and cut into half and deseed it
  • Chop into bite size pieces
  • After the pressure goes off open the cooker and add the chopped snake gourd and pressure cook again for 2 whistles
  • Simultaneously heat oil in a pan and allow  mustard seeds to splutter.then temper withurad dhal, cumin seeds,hing,red chillies,curry leaves 
  • Add onion and salt.Fry until transparent. finally add the shredded coconut.switch off the stove.
  • Once the pressure goes off open and add the tempering and cook for few minutes.
  • Serve as side dish for  Rice or chapathi
